While most modern weddings follow the latest trends, one couple in Paphos recently chose to take a romantic step back in time. On Saturday, September 12, 2026, Kyriakos Georgiou and Andri Yiangou celebrated their special day by reviving one of the most iconic and nostalgic customs of traditional Cypriot weddings: the “ploumisma.”
The couple tied the knot at the Agios Georgios Church in the village of Agios Georgios Mamonia, before heading to the Royal Hill in Nikokleia for their reception.
It was during the celebration that the couple brought the beloved tradition to life. In a spectacular display on the dance floor, family members and loved ones gathered to pin banknotes directly onto the bride and groom. The bills were pinned one after another to form massive chains of money that draped over the couple. Eventually, the growing strands of banknotes connected, beautifully linking Kyriakos and Andri together.
The History of “Ploumisma” While pinning money on newlyweds might surprise some today, it was a staple of Cypriot weddings decades ago. The “ploumisma” served as both a symbolic gesture and a highly practical way for the community to financially support the new couple as they began their life together.
Instead of boxed gifts, guests would pin notes onto the couple’s clothing to the sound of traditional wedding music, often creating streams of money that stretched from the couple’s shoulders all the way down to their feet.
By embracing their cultural roots, Kyriakos (son of Michalis and Kalliopi Georgiou) and Andri (daughter of Kostas and Sotiroula Yiangou) transformed their modern wedding into a beautiful tribute to the past, giving their guests a memorable glimpse into the Cypriot weddings of a bygone era.
